Stargate is coming back as a digital-only prequel series

The long-running science fiction franchise Stargate will be returning later this fall with a new digital show from MGM called Stargate Origins. The announcement was made today at San Diego Comic-Con, during a 20th anniversary retrospective on the series Stargate SG-1.

Each episode of Origins will run 10 minutes in length, with the first season of 10 episodes available exclusively on a new website called Stargate Command. According to MGM’s announcement, Command will also be an official destination for all things Stargate, including a “variety of Stargate assets and content from the franchise’s nearly 25-year history.”

The latest trailer for Marvel’s Inhumans shows a royal coup d’etat

Marvel fans got a better glimpse of what’s ahead for the Inhuman Royal Family during today’s Inhumans panel at San Diego Comic-Con. In the series’ latest trailer, we see more of the conflict between Black Bolt (Anson Mount) and his brother Maximus (Iwan Rheon), and some of the royals’ special abilities.

But will Medusa’s wig improve?

Inhumans, created by Iron Fist showrunner Scott Buck,is Marvel’s latest series for ABC. The show will take viewers to Attilan, the Royal Family’s home on the moon, and seemingly focus on politics in the Inhumans’ world. Legion creator Noah Hawley announced at San Diego Comic-Con that he’s working on a film involving Fantastic Four nemesis (and the greatest supervillain ever created) Doctor Doom.

The greatest villain ever created is getting another chance at the movies

Hawley wouldn’t offer any details about the Fox project, according to Variety, only saying, “I’ll just say two words. The first one is Doctor and the next one is Doom.” The announcement creates a whole host of questions about what direction the writer-producer will take the character in, and how the movie will fit into 20th Century Fox’s own Marvel film universe.

Facebook’s secretive hardware division is exploring modular smartphones

Facebook’s Building 8, the secretive skunkworks division led by former DARPA director Regina Dugan, is looking into developing modular smartphones, according to a report from Business Insider.

The company filed for a patent, published today, that details a “modular electromagnetic device” that would alleviate the issue of “expensive and wasteful” conventional electronics that consumers purchase and then dispose of when they’re inevitably outdated in a couple of years. The patent describes both a phone and a smart speaker as potential product categories.

Google brings Motion Stills to Android, where it’s all motion and no stills

A full year after launching on iOS, Google’s Motion Stills app has arrived on Android — but in pretty much a completely different form.

Motion Stills on iOS is meant to be a really easy way to turn the iPhone’s Live Photos into shareable GIFs — and it’s pretty great at that. But Android doesn’t have Live Photos, so the new Motion Stills is basically just a camera app that exports GIFs.

The app can take two different types of shots. The first, which Google calls a “motion still,” is just a three second video loop.
